Silver tankards and mugs have been produced in England since the 16th century, with the earliest known example hallmarked in 1556. The distinguishing feature of a tankard is a lid which can be opened using the thumb piece, but otherwise the tankard and mug are identical in construction and use. Original glass bottom mugs and tankards, early examples, and design lead forms of the 20th century and by collectible makers, are highly sought after.
