The use of glass and silver claret jugs in the UK began around 1830, before this decanters being the fashion. The glass body allowed the colour of the wine to be seen, an idea that had come from France and the wine of Bordeaux, and the silver mount allowed Silversmiths to create wonderfully ornate, or strikingly simple designs. The most sought after claret jugs are animal shaped examples, and those with intricately engraved glass.
