As the use of salvers increased during the 18th Century, and the items being served upon them grew heavier and larger, it became necessary to add handles and increase the size of the serving area, giving rise to what we now refer to as a tray. During the 18th Century trays were commonly oval in shape and plain in style, or engraved with bright cut decoration. During the Victorian period richly decorated trays were created, and during the 20th Century stylish Arts & Crafts and Art Deco designs can be found.
