First seen in the Victorian Period, and originally used as menu holders, the idea of using larger sets as place card holders appears to have started around the end of the Edwardian period, becoming more commonly used towards the latter half of the 20th Century as the need for a menu holder on the table declined. Early larger sets are rare and highly sought after, but today it is popular to mix and match smaller sets in a range of styles and designs to create a striking look on the table.
