Hallmarked in London in 1700 by Frances Garthorne, this magnificent, William & Mary, Antique Sterling Silver Bowl, is a very rare original 'Monteith' bowl, featuring lion mask drop ring handles, a cast and shaped border, and an engraved crest to one side. The bowl measures 7"(18cm) tall, by 12"(31cm) wide, and weighs 54.8 troy ounces. The 'Monteith' bowl originated around 1680, with the first mention in literature appearing in 1683, and was named after 'Monsieur Monteith', a famous Scottish gentleman who used to wear a cloak with the same shaping at the hem. Examples of Monteith bowls from this period are usually found in Museums.
