Originally designed to hold a calling card, silver card cases became popular items amongst the upper classes in the UK during the Victorian period, although occasional examples from the 1820’s can be found. Calling cards and the cases they were carried in were considered to be signs of social status, and are collected and admired today for their designs, with the ‘Castle Top’ card case being amongst the most desirable. Nowadays they rather handily hold a few credit cards, perfect for a stylish night out on the town.
