Sterling silver baskets are amongst the prettiest pieces of antique silverware available on the market today. Silversmiths such as Paul Storr, Paul de Lamerie, Hester Bateman, and William Frisbee have all created beautiful pierced and ornate baskets, all of which vary in style and shape. Typically silver baskets are oval, with swing handles, although before the 1720’s they tended to have handles on each end, and before this they were circular. Silver baskets are rare before the second quarter of the 18th century, but after this, throughout the Victorian period and even up to today, sterling silver baskets were made in great numbers. Silver swing handled baskets were used often as centrepieces for the dining table, the pierced sides allowing the colour of sweetmeats, breads and fruit to be seen, but smaller examples were also made, occasionally with glass liners, used for serving sugar and cream. The decorative and functional appeal of these pretty silver baskets has ensured that they remain popular with collectors, with early examples by well known silversmiths being highly sort after.

 Hallmarked in London in 1906 by Charles Stuart Harris, this Antique, Edwardian, Sterling Silver Basket is in the George III style with a shaped reeded border and swing handle. The basket is 7.25 inches (8.5cm) long, 5.25 inches (13.5cm) wide, 5.75 inches (14.5cm) to the top of the handle and weighs 5.6 troy oz (174gms).

The sugar basket measures 6.5 inches (16.5cm) tall with the handle up (4.75 inches (12cm) with the handle down), by 3.75 inches (9.5cm) in diameter.

 Hallmarked in London in 1909 by Charles Stuart Harris, this Antique, Edwardian, Sterling Silver Basket is shaped oval with piercing typical of the George II period with a gadroon border detailing and handle. The sweetmeat basket is 6 inches (15.5cm) wide, 5 inches (13cm) deep, 5.75 inches (13.5cm) tall with the handle upright and weighs 5.5 troy oz (170gm).

 Hallmarked in London in 1786 by Hester Bateman, this superb condition George III antique Sterling Silver pierced basket has beaded borders so typical of Hester Bateman's work and the most beautiful brightcut engraving and piercing. The basket is 13" (33cm) long, 9" (23cm) wide, 10" (25cm) high to the top of the handle and weighs 21 troy oz. It is without doubt one of the best examples of a Hester Bateman basket we have ever been fortunate enough to own.
