Hallmarked In 1909

Hallmarked in Birmingham, 1909 by Elkington & Co., this large and impressive Sterling Silver Jug features chased scenes depicting the famous mythological musical competition between Apollo & Marsyas, a twin serpent handle and eagles either side of the pedestal modelled as reeds growing from the base of a lake with lilies, standing on four turtle feet. It was presented to Lt. Col. Mitchell on his retirement from command in 1914. It measures 20"(51cm) to the top of the handle, has a base diameter of 7"(17.5cm) and is 12"(30cm) handle to spout. It weighs 140 troy ounces.
