More Information On Silver Asparagus Servers
Originating in the eastern Mediterranean and Asia Minor, and once known in Britain as 'sparrowgrass', Asparagus, a member of the lily family, has been grown in English country gardens since the 16th century. Asparagus was first cultivated around 2000 years ago, and it was so popular with Roman emperors that special boats were kept with the sole purpose of fetching it, called the 'Asparagus Fleet'. Asparagus was at first considered a luxury item, and so many silver articles were made to use along side this 'Queen of the Vegetables'. Sterling silver asparagus servers are utensils made for the serving of several asparagus stalks as individual portions. Silver asparagus servers come in various forms, from U-shaped tongs with a small metal plate at each end to grip the stalks, to scissor like servers often with claws or discs at each end, sometimes with indentations along the arms to grip with, and often with a turned end on one arm.In Apicius's 3rd century CE book of recipes, 'De re coquinaria' Book III, the oldest surviving book of recipes known, there is a recipe for cooking asparagus, although there is no mention of sterling silver asparagus servers!
